Microsoft today released a new Windows 10 preview for PCs with Cortana resume from phones. The company is simultaneously finalizing the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, which is expected to arrive on October 17, and developing the update that will come after it.
Windows 10 is a service, meaning it was built in a very different way from its predecessors so it can be regularly updated with not just fixes, but new features, too. Microsoft has released many such updates, including three major ones: November Update, Anniversary Update, and Creators Update.
Because Microsoft is now focusing on stability for the Fall Creators Update, these builds aren’t supposed to include new features. If you want to test what’s coming after the Fall Creators Update, you’ll have to get into the “Skip Ahead” group.
And yet, today’s build does have something new: Resume from phones to PC with Cortana. If you have Cortana on your iPhone or Android phone, you can now send articles you’re currently reading to your PC. This is in addition to using Cortana for syncing reminders, notifications, and SMS across devices. I would rather be able to send articles from my PC to my phone, but I’m sure some will like this functionality, too.
This desktop build also includes the following general bug fixes and improvements:
- Fixed an issue where sometimes after an upgrade Windows Update’s update history would be missing a listing for the feature update you’d just done.
- Fixed an issue where scrolling with touch or precision touchpads wasn’t working with the F12 Developer Tools.
- Fixed an issue where pin reset above lock (“I forgot my PIN”) would only work the first time the password was reset.
- Fixed an issue where Microsoft Edge would crash if you added a Favorite to a Favorites folder and then immediately sorted that folder by name.
- Fixed an issue with the indexer from recent flights that could result in Outlook 2016 search failing to index the body of messages.
- Fixed a recent issue resulting in the Skype UWP app not being launched if it was minimized when you clicked an incoming call notification.
Today’s update bumps the Windows 10 build number for PCs from 16288 (made available to testers on September 12) to build 16291. Microsoft no longer tracks or lists known issues, so install at your own risk.
